Nurse Education Needs related to Knowledge and Practice of Gerontological Nursing

Abstract
Purpose:The purpose of this study was to examine the education needs of nurses related to knowledge and practice of gerontological nursing.

Methods: The participants were 408 nurses from 3 general hospitals, 2 long term hospitals, and 1 hospital in G city. Data were collected from July to December 2009. Questionnaires contained structured questions on need for education in knowledge and practice of gerontological nursing. Descriptive analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used with SPSS/WIN 17.0 version for data analysis.

Results: The mean of score for education needs related knowledge and practice of gerontological nursing was 3.43. There were significant differences in education needs according to age, marital status, position, permanent position, geriatric advanced practice nursing education, knowledge about gerontological nursing, and current participation in gerontological nursing education. Education need for knowledge of gerontological nursing had a significant positive correlation with education need in the practice of gerontological nursing.

Conclusion: The findings of this study indicate that to improve quality of care for elders in clinical care settings, it is important that in the development of education programs for nurses consideration be given to nurse education needs related to gerontological nursing knowledge and practice.
